Lactose Intolerance: Favorite Milk Alternatives

Updated: Apr 16, 2019

Ok, SOOOO I know I’m not the only one that struggles in the dairy department. I LOVE me some cream based pastas, cereal, cheese, all that! Until I get the BGs and bad bouts of acne. Nobody has time for that so I’ve been looking for milk alternatives, trying everything from Lactaid and almond milk to flax milk- Yea you read that right. Lol

When the milk aint lactose free and you're in public

Moral of the story: Almond milk is morally wrong (JK) and should not be consumed (Not JK). It’s too thick and tastes like wood— and thats every brand I’ve tried lol. But hey, that's just me! My bad if you love almond milk. I have found some good alternatives though!

A2 Milk

A2 Milk is regular cows milk that only comes from cows hand-picked to naturally produce only A2 protein and no A1. A2 protein is said to ease digestion of milk, meaning less inflammation, gas, bloating, diarrhea and all that. I can vouch for that. Since using this milk, I have less gas and stomach upset.

  • Pros: Makes a great substitute for dishes and drinks requiring milk like stroganoff and cold brew. It comes in a variety of flavors and fat content- whole, 2% and chocolate milk. It's definitely perfect for cereal, thin enough to break up the sugariness of cereal and doesn't add additional flavors to bowl or other dishes.

  • Cons: This can be kind of pricey. On a good day at Harris Teeter, it is 2/$7. BUT the iBotta app often has a $1 cash back coupon. Also, you don't get a gallon for that price, which sucks if you blow through cereal or milk quickly.

Good Karma Flaxmilk + Protein

Good Karma Flaxmilk is a cold-pressed flax oil mixed with filtered water to help you avoid lactose. Benefits include it being a plant based and soy free milk alternative, the presence of Omega 3 fatty acids, and nutrients such as Vitamin A, B12 and D. It’s not a great protein source however. Now... I didn't like this texture for cereal. Like almond milk, it's way too thick and mixes with the sugar in cereals to make a thick syrup. I wasn't with it fam. BUT there were lots of perks I found!

  • Pros: Very creamy and makes a great substitute for dishes and drinks requiring milk like stroganoff, oatmeal, smoothies and cold brew. It comes in a variety of flavors. The unsweetened flavor is flavorless and easily built upon.

  • Cons: Sometimes it is too creamy and needs to be cut for some recipes. Terrible alternative for cereals, especially anything sugary or with flakes— unless you like thick ass milk.

Fairlife

Fairlife is milk that's ultra-filtered for more natural protein and calcium. It has more protein than almond milk, and generally less sugar and no lactose. The taste is super smooth and gives you all the soul comforting that milk gives you. It's perfect for any recipe, from cereal to a stroganoff. I LOVE the chocolate flavor for chocolate milk and protein shakes. And it's slightly easy on the stomach. I get gas every so often with it. Acne though, naw, I still get it with this brand.

  • Pros: Lactose Free with lots of protein. Very rich and makes a great substitute for dishes and drinks requiring milk like stroganoff, oatmeal, smoothies and cold brew. It comes in a variety of flavors.

  • Cons: Still experience discomfort from gas, bloating and acne but not as much with regular milk. Also, this isn't super cheap, normally running between $3-$4.50. Occasionally, it is listed on Ibotta.

Honorable mention

Califa Farms

Califa Farms Coconut Almond Milk Blend is a soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, kosher, vegan, BPA-free milk alternative that has 50% more calcium than milk with only 45 calories per serving. It is made from non-genetically engineered almonds. The founder Greg Steltenpohl became inspired by the legend of Califia, the beautiful black Queen who has come to be known as the “Spirit of California. So I'm not gone lie, I was sold there. But hunny, when I tasted this!!!! CHIIIIILLLLLLEEEE I was blown away! Ya'll already know how I feel about almond milk. I have the same feeling for coconut milk but this was bomb.

  • Pros: Lactose free with lots of protein and calcium. Thin enough for cereals and great coffee drinks or overnight oatmeals. It comes in a variety of flavors, specifically for oats or coffees. I mean the inspiration behind the brand is amazing too! No indigestion issues

  • Cons: Adds a slight flavor to whatever it is added to. Also, this isn't super cheap, normally running between $3-$4.50.
